Precise estimation of SOFC performance and ion transport number of solid electrolytes

Detailed investigations led successfully to improvements in measurement deviations of SOFC performance and ion transport number of solid electrolytes.
R&D into solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) has revealed a need for reductions in measurement deviations of some properties such as power densities, electrode polarizations, and transport number of electrolytes for SOFC.
1. Precise estimates of SOFC power densities and electrode polarizations in order to obtain more reliable measurement data.
2. Measurement of ion transport number with low deviations in order to support R&D of novel solid electrolytes.
(1) Minute control of fuel-gas humidification and modification of furnace control units led to the securement of data that was more reliable than in the past (Figs. 1 and 2).
(2) Multi-point measurements of ion transport number under stabilized conditions led to an reduction in measurement deviations. (Figure 3).

Future Plans
By detailed measurement of electrode reactions we will estimate precisely not only power densities and electrode polarization but also the energy conversion efficiency of SOFC.
Improvements in the reliability of SOFC performance data.
